Woohoo!
As of this afternoon, the first draft of the Firefly novel (tentatively titled: My Own Kind of Freedom) is finished. This one is going to take a lot of revision, as I was (as usual) making it up as I went, and now that I know what happens, it's got to be set up right. But I'm pleased with having finished, and pleased with the book.

Speaking of Firefly, I saw the movie in its final form and liked it. There are bunch of fans in town here for the opening, and I might be hanging with some of them tonight. But for now, I'm going to make some more notes about the revisions, and then, later, I'll probably pour myself a nice drink of something, climb into my hot tub, and contemplate on what a grand world it is. At the moment.

Sometimes I hate you. In the fondest possible way, of course.

Having seen in advance screenings and last night, I can say that my reactions are only very slightly dulled by repetition. I'm not sure I'm happy with some of the final scoring choices and, oddly enough, I remember the cinematography (lighting particularly) of a handful of scenes being more effective in the previews than in the final product last night. Overall, though - particularly for a first directing effort - I remain very favorably impressed.

Woohoo indeed! Given everything I've heard from other interested parties (namely your children ;-) I can't wait to read it! I don't suppose there's any chance we'll be getting an 'advanced screening'of the book?

Bloody damn! Another apparent must-see movie. I have very few of them. Currently The Corpse Bride is on the list for me and my wife and son to see together.

(The picture is not of me, but of my familiar, who told me sometime after he showed up a number of years ago that his name was Loiosh.)

("Why so damn periphrastic, Boss?"
"Shut up, Loiosh.")

Congratulations! And I'm so sorry you couldn't stay around for our Middle Eastern weekend. I'll be posting pics soon so you may at least enjoy some still-lifes from the shows. =)

Hey! I see you've joined the dark side, man.

Congrats on finishing the novel. We'll have to get together sometime this month, as I've got my desk shoveled off, too.

Hey, Steven, this is Terry, the guy who sent you that coffee last year (before the IRS closed down my roastery). I can't think of any other writer I'd love to see writing Firefly (except, of course, me). I look forward to reading it almost as much as reading Dzur when it comes out.

BTW, when is your blog going to return? Or are you doing a new blog?

If you (or anyone else) wants to read my FREE Firefly (fan) novel, check out Kaylee's Lament at:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ScrewtheAlliance
It's not your ordinary "fan" novel -- I wrote it just as I would have written it for Pocket, only they didn't actually buy it. Check it out if you have time, and drop me a line to tell me what you think!

(Note: for all those groaning about another dumb piece of fanfic, I do have some street cred: I wrote a Star Trek Novel and some one pays me real cashy money to write this very day. So I DARE you to check it out!)

Which brings me to the next big question: Any idea how many FF/Serenity novels are planned, how many contracted, and, most importantly, how can I get to write one?

Thanks! And Thanks for being the best gorram Fantasy writer alive today!

Sorry to hear that, Terry; that was wonderful coffee.

I think the right way (as opposed to what I did) to sell a Firefly novel is to send a proposal to Jennifer Heddle at Pocket Books. I guess I'd start with a query letter (including a SASE) asking about submission guidelines.

Best of luck with it, and thanks for the kind words.

And you've managed to suck me into responding here, which I vowed never to do, lest LJ eat my life. Good going. :-)

Actually, I ran one of the more prestigious but poor Specialty Coffee Roasters on the east coast for 5 years or so, unti the owner decided that Federal withholding taxes was something that other people paid. Last year I knew we were doomed and wanted to do some Good Things with my coffee powers. I knew from his blog that Steve was an addict, so I sent him 10-15 lbs of my finest.

Of course, that don't mean I'm not a shameless self-promoter. Until I get a new agent, I'm the only one I got!

Hey, Steve! Long time, no talk.

I'm very excited to hear you're penning a Firefly novel.

That is the definition of "rawks like a ninja hurrican, baby!"

Can't wait to read it.
