"What do you suppose he is, Loiosh?"
"I don't know, boss. I suppose there is always the possibility he's just what he claims to be."
"No," I said. "There isn't."
Now, all of a sudden, everything has changed. Now this guy has some secret agenda, or at least an element of mystery, and it's become important. And now I have to figure out who the fuck he is and what he's up to (not to mention how Vlad knows), and before I'm done, the whole plot might have pivoted 90 degrees. Which means I might have to go back to the beginning and rewrite it to make it look like this is what I had planned from the first sentence.
Why did this happen? Because I think, "No, there isn't," is a really cool line of dialog right there. And the irony is, by the time I've finished, that line of dialog might have vanished.
That always happens.
And, no, I'm not asking for suggestions on who he is or what he's doing; He came out of my head, so I'm the one who gets to bitch-slap him until he tells me what's going on. It's just that this is such a perfect example of what happens when I set in to write something, that I thought people might be interested.
