Ebay auction: draft of Dragon

I'm auctioning off an early draft of Dragon in case someone wants it.  The auction begins today (April 8th) and will run for five days.  The link is here.

In other news, I'm finishing up a last polish on the Firefly novel, after which I'll send it to my agent, and, presumably, some time after that I'll figure out how to publish it as fanfic.  Those who know, hang on to your information for a little while.

The next Vlad novel, Jhegaala,  is still in chapter two, but I'm getting some fun ideas for it; it's sort of forming in my head as I work on other things, which I like.  Partly as inspiration for it, but mostly just for fun, I'm re-reading Raymond Chandler.  Damn, he's good.

Interesting.

Do you make a habit of keeping hardcopy drafts of your old work? And if so, may I ask why? Do you find it at all helpful to be able to go back and reference them after the fact?

I keep electronic files of both published and unpublished works, but almost never hardcopies (not counting actual published copies of anything I've seen published). It honestly wouldn't have occurred to me to keep old hardcopies.

I keep hard copy drafts because I am incapable of throwing anything away.

*blink*
...the Firefly novel. Between that and the new Taltos novel, I believe I just made water in my pantaloons.

Almost completely off topic: I've got a book recommendation.
It's called "Kafka's Soup" (Mark Crick). It's a brilliant cookbook, recipes written in the style of various authors. Chapter 1 "Lamb with Dill Sauce a la Raymond Chandler". I'd think the book would combine two of your passions: cooking and literature...

Hi. I stumbled across your journal from... well, honestly, I have no idea. There was a lot of journal-hopping. Anyhow- you seem to have a really interesting journal, and I was wondering if I could friend you?

Thanks

Well, yeah -- but, if you haven't, read the partial draft of the Poodle Springs story. It's remarkably first-draftish.

Is that meant in a bad or good way?

So far my utter favorite is _The Long Goodbye_. I let Steve take the Chandler omnibus of the first four books - I was reading out of order anyway, and he prefers reading in order. Having read the short stories, I don't know if reading a first draft would be good or not. Of the short stories, his "Nevada Gas" was grand.

But then I want something that's just as nifty as TLG was, really. :D Picky, picky.

Ah, good; among other fine points that follow this particular fact, my mother will stop asking me when you're going to start being properly considerate of her feelings again. (I'm glad that she has accepted that I know a few people, but I do wish I was not being held personally responsible for the creative output of an entire genre or pair of genres.)

I gotta know, Steve, what's your pet name (e.g., Phoenix was "Tucson," IIRC) for Jhegaala?

Love your stories. Found this journal by various means. Would like to friend you, if that's okay?

Firefly novel? Oh, my, that makes me feel all tingly. Any idea when it will be in stores? Rough guess of course.

New Vlad novel, always of the good. Question; any thoughts on Hawk? I'd really love to read the story of how Vlad met Daymar.

Just keep writing, I have everything so far and am always ready for more.

Sure, friend away, and thank you.

The Firefly novel will never be in stores, I expect. But when that fact becomes official, it'll be availible as fanfic.

I'm eating doritos. Alone. In the dark.

Why the monstrous pathos of this palpably plaintive post?

Because I have not a copy of either FF or Jhegaala in my hands :(

April 9 2007, 22:06:33 UTC 5 years ago

wait! if the firefly novel becomes fanfic, can we refer to it as FFFF?

if that's possible, I'd prefer not to pronounce it as eff-eff-eff-eff but rather as fffffffffuh, as if I were trying to get a swear off but couldn't quite manage it.

How about a draft of Yendi?

[info]usagigaijin

April 10 2007, 02:22:13 UTC 5 years ago

A Yendi early draft would definitely be cool!

An auction for an early draft of Jhereg, the book which started it all, would be totally fantastic!

But please wait until I recover financially from this auction :)

Happy to hear that Jhegaala is slowly but surely progressing into something solid.

Yes. Love love love Boyett's _Ariel_.

Think I've owned four different copies of that book; it seems destined to go in and out of my hands. California ate my last copy, after providing it.

You do realize that since this novel is Jheegala, it will undergo at least three changes in style before the end.

You realize, of course, that you are ruining my naive but long-held belief, that you've had the entire series of books totally worked out in your head, since long before you began to type the first sentence of Jhereg...?

WooHOOO!!!

So, I'm dancin'
I'M DANCIN'!
Cause I just won the manuscript!

Little History: I've been a huge fan since Jhereg was released and have turned several people onto the Taltos books myself over the years. I've reread my copies to ruin, and given away copies, forcing me (gleefully) to repurchase several of the books. I even kept the copy of Dragon magazine where they created Vlad and Loiosh as playable D&D characters. So. Yeah.
Do I get geek points for that? heh.
HOWEVER
Because I recently introduced a very good friend to the series, and Mr. Brust in general, I am officially declaring this a birthday gift to him. He loved the books so much, he voraciously devoured them in, like, 4 days. That's with working full time and a new baby! I can't wait to see his face when I give it to him! Gotta remember to have somebody around with a camera!

Well, I've babbled a bit, but I just wanted to let everyone out there know that The Precious is going to a good home and will be enjoyed not for its (possible or not) monetary investment value, but for the unique collectible it is, by someone who has read everything and eagerly awaits *any* upcoming adventures in Dragaera. yaaay Jhegaala!
Thanks to Kelly, my friend who clued me into the auction, "Good watchin' out, yo!"
And special Danke to Mr. Brust for parting with this item.

Gabriel

OoooOoOOoh!

A new Vlad Taltos novel!
Yes! Yes! Yes!
You see, I just love them.
Good luck finishing this one up...any idea when the approximate date of publication will be?
